Call for Nominations for the 2026 Flame of Democracy Award

The Isidore Starr Flame of Democracy Award is an annual honor recognizing an individual, organization, or program in Washington State that has made significant contributions to increasing the public’s understanding of the law, the justice system, or government.

 

Established to elevate leadership in civic education and public legal understanding, the Flame of Democracy Award honors those who ignite curiosity, expand access to civic knowledge, and strengthen the foundations of democracy across Washington communities. Past honorees have included educators, legal professionals, community organizations, and innovative programs dedicated to empowering residents with the tools to engage meaningfully in civic life.

This award recognizes those who go above and beyond to ensure that Washingtonians of all ages understand their rights, responsibilities, and the systems that shape their daily lives.

Nomination Form

  • Nominations are due by June 15, 2026.

  • Nominations should be submitted in the form of a letter of 500 words or less describing the nominee’s work and impact.

  • Each nomination should include:

    • A description of the nominee’s contributions to public understanding of the law, justice system, or government

    • A reference who can provide additional information

    • Any supporting documentation the nominator wishes to include

  • Self‑nominations are welcome.

  • All nominations will be kept confidential.
